What is Budae Jjigae?
Also known as army stew, budae jjigae is a hot pot that combines various ingredients, combining classic Korean flavours and staple American foods (often canned or processed) for an easy, hearty meal.
Common versions of the stew embrace noodles, kimchi, frankfurters, Spam and even baked beans. There are countless ways to customise this dish – you could incorporate a range of your favourite hot pot ingredients to complement the much-loved budae jjigae flavours. As a stew, this dish is also wonderfully easy to prepare. All you have to do is chuck everything into a pot and cook!
Korean hot pots like this are often made in special clay pots called ttukbaegi. They’re ideal for warming stews as the earthenware retains heat, cooking and keeping your food warm for the duration of the meal. You can buy Korean clay pots of various sizes from our online Korean supermarket.
