Street food is the ultimate convenience food, and nobody does it quite like South Korea. Wandering down its streets, it is well known for its culinary imagination and delights. Here are some of our top picks of South Korean street food that you definitely must try.

Korean Egg Toast

Korean egg toast is a delicious twist on the classic egg sandwich. It is comprised of soft white bread and eggs, but also has different fillings such as carrots, cabbage, and ketchup. You can also have the option of adding extra fillings, including ham, cheese and different sauces.

Hotteok - Korean Sweet Pancakes

For those who have a sweet tooth, Korean Sweet Pancakes are the perfect option. Traditionally, these pancakes are filled with brown sugar syrup, but you can add toppings to suit your taste such as nuts, or spices. They are usually served stuffed in a cup, and best enjoyed with a glass of cold milk.

Hweori Gamja – Potato Tornados

What’s better than deep fried potato? Deep fried, spiral potatoes! Also known as twist potatoes, or tornado fries, this street food is a massive favourite in South Korea and for a good reason. Hweori Gamja is made simply by spiral cutting a whole potato onto a skewer, brushed with different seasonings. You can even get variations where a sausage runs through the middle of the spiral!

Grilled Cheese

A simple dish, delicious none the less with a Korean twist. Korean street vendors offer generous blocks of cheese pushed through skewers which are sandwiched in between rice cakes and then grilled.

Korean-style Yakisoba noodles

Yakisoba noodles are a classic staple in South Korean street food.

Typically presented on a teppan (Japanese hot plate), you will find them sizzling away in the street, ready to eat. What makes them different from regular noodles? The secret is in the sauce! South Koreans focus on intense flavours such as soy, oyster and Worcestershire sauce and add vegetables for crunch.

Korean Soft Serve

If you’re an ice cream lover, this really isn’t one to miss. Korean soft serve is 32cm’s tall, making this just over a foot long!

Twigim – Deep Fried Foods

Twigim to the South Koreans means ‘deep fried snacks’, and they are a big fan of them. Amongst street food vendors, you will find such a variety of deep-fried Korean snacks to choose from, such as squid, pepper, fish, and sweet potatoes.

Croissant – Boong – un – Ppang

If you want to try something a little different, South Korea offer Boong- Un- Ppang, a fish-shaped crispy bread with red bean filling. This tasty treat is often found on the streets around winter, and if you prefer something a little more modern, custard, Nutella or peanut butter are all on offer.

French Fry Covered Corn Dogs

Yes, you read that right. Corn dog sausages on skewers that have been wrapped in French fry pieces make for the perfect savoury treat.

Gimbap

If you’re looking for something a little less deep fried and a little more healthy, the Korean adaptation of norimaki sushi might be your preferred option. Steamed rice, vegetables and various meats are all encased in a seaweed wrap, making it a great healthy and delicious choice of street food.

Korean Street Barbeque

Don’t go to South Korea without trying their classic barbeque. Using different types of leaves such as shiso or kale, wrap up a small amount barbequed meat and banchan (side dish) you would like and then eat the wrap whole in one!
