Man eating noodles

Whether you’re a foodie or a fan of Chinese cuisine, celebrate the culinary arts with these flavourful films! It’s time to trade in the popcorn for some yummy noodles or dumplings with these movies about Chinese food!

Eat Drink Man Woman (1994)

Master Chef Chu is head of his family of three daughters and cooks them a delicious banquet every Sunday, where they sit and discuss the changes in their lives that develop throughout the film. Eat Drink Man Woman consistently features at the top of foodie movies lists, and it’s easy to see why when you watch the cooking take place. Intricately and expertly slicing each component of the family’s meal, Chef Chu somehow makes every process look effortless (and delicious), even when it involves killing, cutting and gutting fresh fish, chicken and duck!

Rice Rhapsody (2004)

Chinese-American chef Martin Yan stars as Kim Chui, the owner of a struggling restaurant, who cannot compete with the more successful restaurant run by main character Jen, who is known for making the best Hainanese Chicken Rice in the area. Rivalry forms between the two chefs as Kim Chui creates a similar signature dish, Hainanese Duck Rice, which quickly becomes popular throughout the town. The film comes to a head during a cooking contest in search of the best traditional dish from Singapore. A subplot also runs through the film regarding Jen’s struggles with coming to terms with all three of her sons being gay.

The Chinese Feast (1995)

Cooking competitions are a recurring theme in many of these foodie films, but The Chinese Feast is certainly the most impressive of these movies. When restauranteur, Au, is approached by an organisation seeking to merge all Chinese restaurants into an unbeatable monopoly, he protests and finds himself challenged to cook the impressive Manchu Han Imperial Feast, or risk losing his business to the group. He sets about gathering a team of top chefs, including former master chef, Kit, who must reunite with his wife to reawaken his love for cooking! The food scenes are awe-inspiring, and you’ll want to take up cooking immediately!

The God of Cookery (1996)

Stephen Chow plays a celebrity chef of the same name, dubbed ‘The God of Cookery’ in this Cantonese comedy about the food industry. After being outed as a fraud who cannot cook, Chow makes his way to a secret culinary school to truly master the art of cooking. He returns to Hong Kong ready to take on his rivals and win back the title of ‘The God of Cookery’! Watch the judge’s hilarious response to sampling some of the God of Cookery’s food!
