Is Katsu Curry Spicy?

Typically, katsu curry is not particularly fiery like other curries. The flavour profile is more on the sweet, fragrant side. This recipe uses ready-made curry cubes to achieve the distinctive katsu flavour so it doesn’t call for adding any fresh chillies, keeping it quite mild (although you can certainly add a bit of extra spice if you want).

What to Serve Katsu Curry With

Katsu curry is often served with rice or shredded cabbage salad. Our recipe takes a slightly different route, pairing it with chewy udon noodles. This creates a delicious noodle dish that makes for the perfect, fulfilling meal any day of the week!

Japanese Chicken Katsu Curry Ingredients

Chicken Katsu:

  • Plain flour
  • Panko breadcrumbs
  • 2 eggs, beaten
  • 3 chicken breasts
  • Salt, black pepper & smoked paprika
  • Oil for frying

Curry:

  • 1.5 tbsp olive oil
  • 1 onion, minced
  • 3 garlic cloves, minced
  • 2 carrots, diced
  • 2 potatoes, diced
  • 6 cups water
  • 4 curry roux cubes or S&B Golden Curry
  • Udon noodles

How to Make Chicken Katsu Curry

  1. Place the chicken breasts inside a freezer bag and pound with a rolling pin. Season with salt, pepper and smoked paprika. Coat the chicken with flour, egg, and panko. Deep fry until golden brown.
  2. Heat the oil in a pot over medium heat. Add the onion and garlic. Sauté until fragrant then add carrots, potatoes, water and curry roux cubes.
  3. Simmer uncovered on medium-low heat, stirring frequently, until the curry thickens. If your curry is too thick, add water to thin the sauce. Meanwhile, cook the udon noodles according to the packet’s instructions.
  4. Place the noodles in a bowl, ladle the curry sauce and top and add the chicken katsu.
