With its refreshing, slightly earthy taste, matcha makes a fantastic flavour to incorporate into a range of snacks. From mochi to biscuits & sweets, check out some of our favourites.

Matcha ice cream mochi

Matcha is an incredibly popular drink in Japan, so much so that the delicate flavour and vibrant green colour often get incorporated into a number of different snacks and treats.

Ready to take your love of matcha one step further? Here are some of our favourite matcha-flavoured snacks to tide you over.

What is Matcha?

For the uninitiated, matcha is a very fine powder made from ground green tea leaves. The powder is whisked into water to produce a delicious tea. This differs from other forms of green tea because the leaves aren’t steeped and removed upon drinking but rather combined with water and consumed.

The tea plants are specially grown under shades which enhances the chlorophyll production, providing that distinctive bright green colour.

Matcha has quite an earthy, fresh taste. Some people describe it as a grassy or ‘green’ flavour. This delicate freshness is what makes it such a lovely flavour to combine with baked goods and desserts.

Matcha has been an important part of Japanese tea culture for centuries. In recent years, it’s seen a boost in popularity in the West, with many UK cafes and coffee shops now having it on the menu – not to mention all the matcha-flavoured treats now available!

Matcha Mochi

As matcha is a classic Japanese ingredient, it makes sense you’d find it combined with another iconic Japanese dessert – mochi. Mochi itself has quite a neutral flavour, giving the matcha plenty of room to shine. Enjoy the delicious blend of chewy glutinous rice cake, with sweet red bean paste and refreshing matcha green tea flavour for a crowd-pleasing dessert or simple snack.

Matcha Ice Cream Mochi

Following on from this, why not add a bit of ice cream into the mix? Ice cream mochi has seen a massive rise in popularity over the last few years, and for good reason. The succulent mochi dough encasing creamy, moreish ice cream provides the perfect indulgent bite. The matcha flavour balances the sweetness of the ice cream wonderfully, making for a refreshing, sumptuous treat.

Or, try a Kit Kat with a green tea twist. Here, the regular chocolate coating on the wafer biscuit is replaced by a tasty chocolatey matcha blend, using authentic Japanese matcha sourced from Uji, Kyoto.

Matcha Oreos

This twist on the iconic cookie replaces the usual white filling with an unbeatable green tea ice cream layer. Sandwiched between two chocolate Orea biscuits, the matcha filling brings a somewhat floral, earthy taste that blends harmoniously with the cookie’s sweetness.

Meiji Rich Matcha Biscuits

Like with the Oreos, these tasty biscuits from Meji combine crunchy chocolate biscuits with a creamy matcha filling. The biscuits capture the perfect essence of Japanese confectionary, toning sweet flavours with the earthiness of matcha. They pair excellently with a cup of tea – matcha or otherwise!

Matcha Pocky

Another classic Japanese snack is Pocky. These are long thin biscuit sticks dipped in a flavoured silky coating. This matcha flavoured Pocky combines the nuanced green tea taste with the sweetness of vanilla ice cream – add the delectably crunchy biscuit into the mix and it’s a match made in heaven.

Matcha Glico Pejoy Biscuit Sticks

Glico’s Pejoy biscuits are similar to Pocky, but they have a filling running through a hollow biscuit stick rather than coating the outside. This variation marries a rich matcha-infused biscuit with a fruity peach cream filling for a refreshing and unique flavour experience. We also stock a version with a red bean filling.
