Want to know more about sushi? Check out these top five facts!

Sushi was originally a street food

While sushi is now considered more of an indulgent dish, it was originally sold as a cheap and cheerful snack on the go, usually bought from a street food vendor.

Nori was taken from the undersides of boats

The seaweed used to wrap up sushi rolls, known as nori, was originally just picked off from items in the sea, such as the undersides of boats or pier legs. It was then shaped into sheets and dried in the sun. Nowadays, nori is grown and farmed specifically for use in sushi.

Sashimi can be dangerous

While this may seem like a given, considering that sashimi is slices of raw meat (including raw chicken!), one of the most dangerous dishes available in Japan is the infamous Fugu, which is enjoyed as a sashimi dish. Containing lethal amounts of poison in various organs and glands in the pufferfish, eating a poorly prepared fugu can lead to death! To be able to serve the dish, a very strict and rigorous training process is undertaken.

Sushi becomes ‘zushi’ when it is a specific type

If you use the word for a type of sushi, before the word sushi, it is turned into ‘zushi’. So the word maki would become maki-zushi, or nigiri would be nigiri-zushi when talking about specific kinds of sushi in Japan.

Maki-zushi rolls get their name from the mat

The bamboo mat used to roll up sushi rolls is called a makisu. Therefore the typical Maki style sushi rolls are named after the mat that makes them.
